Welcome!

You are looking live at the new VERB! The content remains the same, but the layout is designed to read more like a magazine. Instead of scrolling down a long continuous document, you can now turn the page by clicking the link in the bottom right corner. Or you can leap around by clicking on the white page numbers to your left. We hope this makes reading The VERB more enjoyable to you. We’re pretty sure we’ve gotten all the links working, but if you come across anything that doesn’t work, drop me a line.

It's finally October, my favorite time of the year! (Smell that pumpkin pie?) We already have our Halloween decorations scattered about, and now it's time to pull out our favorite scary movies to watch over the course of the month. I’m not fond of the gory/slasher (plotless) movies, I’m more into suspense and thrillers. And if you're of the same mind, allow me to recommend a doozy: Secret Window. This 2004 film, which stars Johnny Depp, is based on the chilling novella "Secret Window, Secret Garden" by Stephen King. It's about a writer who, in his secluded lake house, struggles with divorce, writer's block and a psychotic stranger who claims he stole his story. It also has a much better ending, in my opinion, than the one in the novella, thanks to the outstanding screenwriter David Koepp. You’ll relate to all the writerly things going on, especially when he sits at his desk staring endlessly at his computer screen. How many times have we done that? My favorite line: "No bad writing." I give this story a round of applause, two thumbs up, five stars and any other sign that translates to very well done. Check it out, if you dare.

A very special congratulations to ReadingWriter Heide Kaminski. Her novelette "Sun Serai" is available for download here. Her novel The Search for the Million $$$ Ghost, co-written with Dorothy Thompson and Pam Lawniczak, is now available in ebook format and goes into print in February of 2007. Heide is always busy writing or reading or providing some of the best Opinions in the biz. May you sell two gazillion copies, Heide!

Okay, I'm pouring the coffee and slicing the pumpkin pie. Come on in and make yourself comfortable. When you're ready ... turn the page.
